Health, fitness and nutrition for everyday life

Protein at breakfast helps keep you full and focused until lunch. These five quick, tasty ideas take ten minutes or less and use everyday ingredients you probably already have.

If your usual breakfast is a quick bowl of sugary cereal or a pastry on the go, you may find yourself hungry again by mid-morning. Adding protein to your first meal of the day can help. Protein digests more slowly than refined carbohydrates, which helps you feel satisfied for longer, and spreading protein across your meals supports muscle health as you age.

Why Protein at Breakfast Matters

Many people eat most of their protein at dinner and very little in the morning. Nutrition researchers often suggest aiming for roughly 20 to 30 grams of protein at each main meal instead. A protein-rich breakfast may also help reduce snacking later in the day, which is useful if you are managing your weight.

Five Fast Favorites

  • Eggs on toast with greens: fry or poach two eggs and serve them on wholegrain toast with spinach or asparagus for roughly 15 to 18 grams of protein.
  • Greek yogurt bowl: top a large serving of plain Greek yogurt with berries, seeds and a drizzle of honey for up to 20 grams.
  • Cottage cheese and fruit: mix cottage cheese with sliced peaches or pineapple and a handful of walnuts.
  • Protein oats: cook oats in milk, then stir in a spoon of peanut butter and top with sliced banana.
  • Veggie scramble wrap: scramble eggs with peppers and onions, then roll them into a wholegrain wrap to eat on the go.

“The easiest nutrition upgrade most people can make is adding a real source of protein to breakfast. It changes how the whole morning feels.” – registered dietitian

Make Mornings Easier

A little preparation removes the stress from busy mornings. Boil a batch of eggs on Sunday to grab during the week, portion yogurt and fruit into jars the night before, or keep a bag of pre-chopped vegetables in the fridge for quick scrambles. If you follow a plant-based diet, tofu scrambles, soy yogurt and nut butters are excellent protein sources too.

Pick one of these breakfasts to try tomorrow morning. Notice how your energy and hunger feel before lunch, then rotate through the others to keep things interesting. Small changes at breakfast can set a healthier tone for the entire day.
